This Week at Watershed:
Start with Why
Matthew 6:16-24

In this week's passage, we see an invitation to freedom from the relentless pursuit of more, the neverending concern with what others think about me, the nagging feeling that we are not good enough. Where empire is demanding, complicated, and all about obligation, we find in the contours of the Kingdom an invitation to relationship with the one who will never let us down.

Matthew 6:5–15

Key Verse: Matthew 6:8–9 - Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. “This, then, is how you should pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, . . .

We all learn and use a prayer form that is often called "The Lord's Prayer." The words and form have been given by Jesus to his people across time and cultures. What we can not forget though is this: Jesus gives this form to people He has first invited into relationship with His Father through his grace: "Because you are His deeply-loved, fully-adopted children, you can pray in ways like this!"

Matthew 6: 1-6, 16-18

This week we will consider Jesus' caution against performing our religious practices in front of an audience in order to gain their approval.  We will see that Jesus is just as concerned about our motivations behind our actions as he is our actions themselves.  This, we will see, has far-reaching implications for our own context today.  Join us as we explore this together.

Matthew 6:1-6

Why do we say the words, “look at me”?  Is it for attention, acknowledgment, acceptance, or something else?  The good news about Jesus and in His Kingdom is that we don’t have to “perform” acts of piety for God or for the world.  We can simply do what God has called us to without needing anyone to ever know.

This week we continue our new sermon series through Jesus' Sermon on the Mount titled "The Message of the Kingdom." We will consider Jesus opening words of the sermon known as the Beatitudes where Jesus calls blessed eight unlikely groups of people.  We will ponder what Jesus is trying to communicate in the Beatitudes - in light of his Kingdom announcement last week.  Then we will wrestle with what these words might have to say in our own lives today.  Join us as we continue our journey through these powerful words of Jesus.

Wonderful News
Matthew 5:1-12

At the beginning of Jesus’ message about the Kingdom of God, He shares with his disciples, his apprentices, who the Kingdom of God is for.  The “beatitudes” (blesseds) are a description of what the Kingdom makes available for people more than it is something for us to somehow do ourselves.  It’s wonderful news, not a good to-do-list.

To introduce the series, we will consider the central message of Jesus' earthly ministry found in Matthew 4:17 - "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near."  What do these words mean? This Week’s Sermon Information:

Preaching: Rev. Kory Plockmeyer - Executive Director of Movement West Michigan
Sermon: “Fluent in the Kingdom”
Text: Matthew 4:12-17, 23-25
Sermon Snapshot: Jesus begins his public ministry with a challenge and a declaration: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4:17). He does more than just talk about this Kingdom, though; he lives it out - bringing healing, wholeness, restoration, and forgiveness wherever he goes. As a follower of Jesus, I find it easy to talk ABOUT the way things should be - but not always as easy to see the kingdom of heaven coming near in my own life. As the Harderwyk community begins studying the Sermon on the Mount, my hope is that we orient ourselves together to be people who don’t just talk about the Kingdom but who live in it in our daily lives.

The Life of an Apprentice
Matthew 4:18-22
One of the best ways and pictures we have to understanding what it looks like to do life with Jesus is apprenticeship.  To be an apprentice of Jesus is to except His invitation to find ourselves in Him, be formed by Him, and follow in His ways.  Join us as we reflect on this journey of life that we are all invited into.
